The Gravity Vents of the Renaissance 1000H

The Rumford 1000H comes with a gravity vent system designed to increase efficiency and potentially heat additional rooms.

Gravity vents are simply ducts that use hot air’s natural tendency to rise to re-distribute heat. The ducts can be installed in the same room as the fireplace, into an adjacent room or up to 15 feet up to a second floor. There is no power required in order for the gravity vents to operate. We also offer an optional blower that can increase the air flow through the gravity vents. The optional blower boosts efficiency and helps to move warm air throughout the home.

With the door closed and the optional blower installed the efficiency of the Renaissance Rumford 1000 H approaches 50%. The efficiency of a traditional open fireplace is often somewhere between 0% and 10%, and can actually be negative. They achieve negative efficiency by having more heat drawn out of the room with the fireplace than is being created by the fire. Fireboxes that are made the traditional way with a deep square back do very little to push heat into the home. The Rumford firebox design allows for optimal heat output in any log configuration.

*It is very important to note that, although there is considerable heat radiated from the front opening of the RR1000H with the door open, the net efficiency of all fireplaces with the door open is very low because of the huge amount of heated air which flows up the chimney. To achieve maximum output and efficiency, the Renaissance Rumford™ 1000H must be operated with the door closed.

Technical information

Note 1: It is possible to overfire the Renaissance Rumford. The suggested maximum load size is 3 logs that are 6” in diameter and 20” in length. A larger wood load can fit, but the amount of heat crated can damage the Skamol panels over time.

Note 2: These fireplaces have an access panel to accept an aftermarket gas log assembly. You may not install a gas lighter in any Renaissance fireplace because the high firebox temperatures will burn out the log lighter very quickly.

Note 3: All Renaissance Fireplaces™ come equipped to accept a 4'' outside air duct, depending upon the length a 5'' duct can also be used.

Note 4: The Renaissance Rumford™ fireplace is environmentally friendly and provides a magnificent view of the fire. It is approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is:

• Typically burning at a rate of 4 kg/hr.
  
• Clean-burning with an emission rate of 3.4 g/kg when burned with the door open and the firescreen closed as tested with ASTM 2558 test protocol, ASTM 2558: Standard Test Method for Determining Particulate Matter Emissions from Fires in Low Mass Wood Burning Fireplaces
  
• Clean-burning with an emission rate of 0.75g/kg when burned with the door closed as tested with ASTM 2558 test protocol.
  
• Clean-burning with an equivalent emission rate (EPA method 5H) of 3.94 g/hr when burned with the door closed.
  
• Exempt as per the EPA Stove test protocol.
